We look forward to welcoming you to Temple Beth Israel for the High Holidays.

This letter contains several important announcements from the Search and Religious Committees, Officers and Board of Directors of Temple Beth Israel.

Welcome, Rabbi Tracy Nathan!

We are pleased to announce that Rabbi Tracy Nathan will be joining us as our new Rabbi, beginning August 1. Many of you met Rabbi Nathan when she interviewed with us in April, and found the service she lead to be spirited, and her sermon inspiring. Rabbi Nathan received her ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, in 2003.

After serving at Congregation Beth Sholom in San Francisco, Rabbi Nathan and her family moved to the Boston area in 2006. She has taught at the Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston; at Genesis, Brandeis University’s summer program for high school students; and Tufts University, where she also facilitated interfaith programs. She lives in Brighton with her husband Rabbi Scott Slarskey, who is on the faculty at the Solomon Schechter Day School in Newton, and their five-year-old son.

Your first opportunities to meet Rabbi Nathan will be at our Monday and Thursday morning minyan services that she attends in August. We will welcome her at our congregational meeting on Sunday, August 22; her first Shabbat morning service with us will be August 28, and you will also have a chance to meet Rabbi Nathan during the Selichot program and service on Saturday evening, September 3. After the High Holidays, we will organize several informal gatherings where you can meet Rabbi Nathan in a smaller setting.

Renew Your Membership

It is time to renew your Temple Beth Israel membership for the coming year. We thank you for your continued support of the institution that has served and represented the Jewish community of Waltham for the last century.

Membership dues for 2010-2011 are $300 per person and $600 per family.  Despite a nominal increase, the first in several years, our synagogue’s dues are among the lowest in the area.  Annual synagogue dues cover less than 50% of the synagogue’s operating costs.  We try to keep costs low. If you have a financial hardship, please contact the President or the rabbi to make appropriate arrangements. Our first commitment is to building community.  We will not turn anyone away. At the same time, expenses increase, so we encourage you to voluntarily increase your dues pledge by an additional amount as an affirmation of the value that Temple Beth Israel brings to you, your family, and the greater Waltham Jewish community.

Please return your dues form by August 15, so that we may begin to process your High Holiday tickets and send them to you in time. If you need to purchase additional tickets for guests, please indicate as such on the membership form.

You can pay online through Paypal below or mail in your forms to the Temple Office.

High Holidays

We are pleased that Cantor Ellen Band will be returning to lead services with Rabbi Tracy Nathan.  The High Holidays come early in September this year.  Selichot, the service to open the High Holiday season, is Saturday September 3. Join us for a special program presented by Rabbi Nathan at 9:00 pm, refreshments, and the Selichot service which will end around midnight.

Erev Rosh Hashanah is Wednesday, September 8, continuing Thursday and Friday, September 9 and 10.  Kol Nidre is on Friday, September 10, and Yom Kippur day services are on Saturday, September 11. Watch the August/September Temple Newsletter or visit the Temple’s web site at www.tbiwaltham.org for a complete schedule of High Holiday Services.  For the first time in decades, we will be using a new prayer book, Mahzor Lev Shalem, published this year by the Rabbinical Assembly, at our services.

If you would like to participate in our High Holiday services by volunteering for an aliyah, ark opening, English prayer, or other honor, please contact Andrea in the Temple office by August 10, so that we may try to accommodate your request.  If you will need babysitting for your children or grandchildren while you are at services, please contact Andrea so we can notify you of arrangements.

We look forward to a new year and several new beginnings this fall at Temple Beth Israel, and we welcome your participation.

Sincerely,
